Rome municipality area is divided according to three different typologies,

  • Administrative
  • Town planning
  • Historical or toponomastics

Nowadays Rome is divided in 19 municipalities, which are the local administration of the town.

These municipalities took the place of the former 20 wards, created in May 1972 and numerated from I to XX. In July 1977 the wards’ territory had been divided following an urban principle. The present municipalities are divided in 155 urban areas.

Before than this division, Rome municipality was composed by 166 districts, divided as follows:

  • 22 rioni all inside the Aurelian’s walls, but Borgo and Prati;
  • 35 districts around the Aurelian’s walls;
  • 6 suburbs;
  • 53 areas that added to 7 areas of Fiumicino municipality formed the Agro Romano.

If you are not sure about which area, district, rione or suburb, are you from, you have just to give a look to the marble slab at the beginning of your street. In these slabs you will find, besides the name of the street, a little description of the name and a letter with a roman number.

The letters are Z, Q, S, R, which correspond to Zona (Area), Quartiere (District), Suburbio (Suburb), Rione. Each letter is followed by the corresponding roman number.
