During the national assembly held on Saturday the 19th and Sunday the 20th of December at Mariot Park Hotel, “Sinistra e Libertà” (“Left and Freedom”) became an independent political subject,

being no more only an election signboard as it had been conceived last Spring.

Delegates and activists from all over Italy came in one after the other in a crowded room. There were illustrious figures of the left wing, like Claudio Fava, Giuliana Sgrena, Fabio Mussi, Francesco Forgione, Mauro Palma, Franco Giordano and many others. The concluding speech was given by Nichi Vendola, indisputable leader of this political formation and president of region Puglia as well.

“Sinistrà e Libertà” underlines the need of a political force to the left of “Partito Democratico” (“Democratic Party”). Moreover it isn’t to be averse to the logic of government, as “Rifondazione Comunista” (“Communist Party”) often stated.

The Saturday and Sunday meeting made temporary rules, aimed at leading this new subject to the party conference that will be held in Spring of 2010, in order to make it an actual party. Meanwhile 32 people were elected to be members of the national coordination. They are Fulvia Bandoli, Valentina Bocchino, Eva Catizone, Paolo Cento, Monica Cerutti, Lisa Clark, Chiara Cremonesi, Loredana De Petris, Elettra Deiana, Dino Di Palma, Daniele Farina, Claudio Fava, Ciccio Ferrara, Nicola Frantoianni, Marco Fumagalli, Marco Furfaro, Umberto Guidoni, Betty Leone, Gianni Mattioli, Gennaro Migliore, Erasmo Palazzotto, Mauro Palma, Mariella Parmendola, Chicca Perugia, Michele Ragosta, Luca Robotti, Simonetta Salacone, Alba Sasso, Arturo Scotto, Giuliana Sgrena, Nichi Vendola, Alessandro Zan. Vendola was elected national spokesperson with one accord and with a great following acclamation of those present.

The symbol has been partially renewed and it’s ready to be displayed at the next regional elections. Vendola has already stated he intends to run for the second mandate in his region Puglia. Nevertheless his candidacy is not to be well thought of by the parties “Italia dei Valori” (“Values’ Italy”) and “Unione di Centro” (“Union of the Centre”), while “Democratic Party” would like to put the mayor of Bari Emiliano in for president, and they refuse a primary election, that Vendola had already won in 2004. It is certainly ironic that a party, that had been born just from a primary election, now refuse this chance to the comrade Vendola.
